Morocco protesters demand release of political prisoners

RABAT, June 5, 2013 (AFP)

Some 200 members of the movement of 20 February reformers of the Morocco gathered outside the Ministry of justice in Rabat Wednesday to demand the release of political prisoners, an AFP journalist
reported. The demonstrators were joined by hundreds of unemployed graduates, who are organizing almost daily demonstrations in the capital.

"Releasing February 20 activists", and "peaceful demonstrations are a right," were among the slogans they chanted.

"The 20 February movement is calm, he has never called for violence."We will continue to protest until our comrades are freed, one of the demonstrators told AFP.

In recent months, only a group of 18 Moroccan NGO has called for the release of all political prisoners, among these about 60 militants with the youth movement of 20 February which was born the Arab spring protests that erupted throughout the region at the beginning of 2011.

Charges on which political prisoners were imprisoned include taking part in unauthorized demonstrations, violence against the security forces and drug trafficking.

Several of them have been on hunger strike to protest against their detention, the Moroccan Association of human rights, said last month.

Limited political reforms in 2011 and the elections that took place this year has helped defuse the mass demonstrations of street as the main towns of the swept Morocco, but discontent in the Kingdom remains in the high unemployment rate, as well as widespread poverty and corruption.
